Here’s what your child has been up to this week on Team Equinox~

Science:
In Science, we are studying the theory of plate tectonics after learning about Pangea and the Continental Drift. Students should finish their projects on plate tectonics this weekend if they have yet to. We will start our study of rocks and minerals next week.
Our Trout Release Date is set for June 11th from 8am-1pm at Mills RIverside Park. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out this form.

Humanities:
In Social Studies, we have begun our Power to the People project by conducting research on an American changemaker who has fought for equality and rights in this country, past or present. Students have been assigned a person they are interested in researching, and are working to find resources and information about their person and the struggle. In the weeks to come, students will be writing a research paper about this person, which connects to their art project in ELA.

Homework - Students should complete any missing work (please check PowerSchool and Google Classroom).

In ELA, we finished looking at LGBTQ+ struggle for equality, and introduced our struggle for equality art project, in anticipation of our Power to the People celebration on June 7. Students were also given their STAR reading assessment, and I handed back most students’ scores (one class will receive theirs on Monday). If you have any questions about this assessment, please let me know. Next week, we will start planning out how to finish the art project and the artist statement in time! Students will be given a spelling test on Tuesday. All 7th graders should bring their favorite book to school on Wednesday.

Homework: Independent reading for 30 minutes each night (for 5 of 7 days per week).

7th Grade Math: This week students continued to explore how to interpret, draw models and write algebraic expressions and equations to represent real world problems. Students spent time reviewing how to add, subtract multiply and divide rational numbers. Students also took their STAR math assessment.

Next week students will explore the connection between math and poetry.

Optional Homework: Practice using all operations (+, -, /, x) for rational numbers or practice percent problems on Khan Academy.

8th Grade Math: This week students continued their exploration of congruence and geometric transformations. Students continued to practice rotations, reflections and translations of two dimensional figures. Students worked on giving specific directions for transforming figures, for instance including degrees of rotation and direction, clockwise or counterclockwise. Students also took their STAR math assessment.

Next week on Tuesday students will take a test on rigid transformations.

Optional Homework: Students can continue to practice doing transformations using Khan Academy.

Make it a great week!
Students focused on interpreting one another’s work and writing equivalent expressions and equations. An example of this is 4(x + 2), could be written as x + 2 + x + 2 + x + 2 + x + 2 or 4x + 8. Students also practiced evaluating expressions by substituting in numbers, for example when x = 1 then 4(1 + 2) = 4 x 3 = 12 and solved equations. Students practiced recording information in a bank ledger using deposits and withdrawals. Students also worked on problems involving percentages, tips, tax, discounts and profit.

In regards to content, students are investigating Newton’s First Law and Projectile Motion while engineering a launcher in groups. We are now using Wednesdays as Working Wednesdays for students to independently work on missing or incomplete assignments. Check in with your student as to what science work they need to focus on. Most students need to work on their simple machines project or cover page.

I’m sure your student is happy to hear that. At this point, if your student has not finished their stations, I am asking that they come to lunch or after school to finish it up. The same is true for students who have not yet completed their “work” assessment- see PowerSchool. Next on the docket, we have started our Simple Machine Project. Students have a choice of a bunch of mini-projects (worth a variety of points). They can choose between writing a creative story, constructing a Rube-Goldberg Machine, writing a song/poem, creating a notebook sheet/poster, or a student led project. The combined value must be 100 points or higher and will count for ½ of the final assessment for our simple machines unit. Depending on our progress, we may finish the week with a traditional assessment or start Newton’s First Law.

Hi folks!

In Social Studies this year I will be using Schoology as our online learning management system. Please check out the link (below) to a Google Doc that explains why I am using this system and describes more about how to access it!
We Did With Our Summer (Pt. I)Hello Team Equinox -

We hope the summer is treating you well and that you've been enjoying these sunshine days. Here are some of the things your teachers have been up to, and if you'd like, please post your summer happenings in the comments. We'll share half of the teachers today and half in another post.
I love to ride horses and on this day, the rain started as we pulled up to the barn! We will try again soon. We had severe thunderstorms and intense heat and humidity in Iowa and Illinois this summer, when we spent 12 days visiting family and friends. We even celebrated my Grandmother's 90th birthday with a big party! I was a server - that meant I did whatever my Grandma, Mom, and Aunts told me to do. In between traveling, painting our living/dining room, training our dog Buddy, and watching a sidewalk be put in on our street, I read three educational books for school and am reading some of the middle school summer read books.

During this two week adventure I went sight-seeing, ate delicious Martinican cuisine, observed and interacted with the locals, learned about the history of the country, and even hiked a volcano! The rest of my summer was spent reading, hiking, visiting the city of Philadelphia for the first time, and spending time with family and friends.
Directly after last school year, I went to Portland, Oregon to work at Camp Ukandu (a camp for children living with cancer). The picture here is from one of our skits at campfire (I'm in the yellow shirt). The rest of the summer saw me either attending to baby preparations or swimming and canoeing at Lake Dunmore. I also read some terrific books. I particularly enjoyed Ghost by Jason Reynolds (which had some great characters you could really root for and a wide-open ending), The Inquisitor's Tale: Or, The Three Magical Children and Their Holy Dog (a rollicking adventure with illuminations (drawings in a medieval style) on nearly every page), and You Don't Have to Say You Love Me by Sherman Alexie (my favorite 'adult book' read - a memoir about the famous author and his relationship with his mother). But the best part of my summer had to be the birth of my daughter, Imelda Eliot BinderMoore. We're pleased to report that she and mama are healthy and happy!
Some of the activities that I have been doing include taking day trips to local parks, hiking, attending boot camp classes and running. My favorite summer challenge was participating in the "Dirty Girl Mud Run" in Killington, VT. It is an obstacle course fun run for women and I got to do it with some of my family members. It was a blast and we had lots of laughs as we waded and crawled through mud and over various obstacles. I have also done a lot of reading for fun. I read ten of the books that were on the middle school summer reading list. My favorite book was The Inn Between by Marina Cohen because it kept me guessing. I am looking forward to the new school year and all the new adventures that lie ahead.

There will be paper bags with advisory names in the room each advisory goes to for PLP. You are strongly encouraged to donate a few items from your pantry at home or extra food bought at the grocery store to these bags. The total food collected will be donated to the food shelf and distributed among families struggling to put meals on the table each day. The advisory that donates the most food will be rewarded with a lunchtime ice cream party soon after the competition has concluded. You have until Friday the 12th to submit your donations and try to help your advisory win the ice cream. Good donations consist of some things such as peanut butter, crackers, canned vegetables and meats, and cereal. Pamphlets will be handed out to each advisor and posters will be hung in the hallways. On these will be more information as to what the food shelf is in the most need of. Pasta and marinara sauce are usually good donations, but the food shelf currently is not in need of those items.

This link will take you to some of our more visual poetry (book spine, blackout, and chance poetry).

We also wrote some "exquisite corpse" poetry, where students write a line of poetry, fold it over, and pass it to the next person, who writes their line - and so on. The results, as you can see here, are pretty entertaining.

And last, but not least, students were able to just write poems - and a couple of those are posted here.

Enjoy the end of National Poetry Month! As a reminder, Poem In Your Pocket Day is April 27 - a day to encourage students to carry poems around with them. If students send me a picture of their poem and either themselves or where they are, there will be some kind of reward! Photos will be accepted upon students' return to classes as well.
Back in January, thanks to the General Stannard House Committee (thanks, Bill!) and the Milton Historical Society, we were treated to a presentation by noted historian, Howard Coffin. LCATV recorded this presentation and made it available for the public to view. Enjoy!

We hope you are well. Here is the health round up for March!

In the month of March we saw almost 400 students in the Middle School. Out of the students we saw, 93% stayed in school :). Like the past months, our Middle School kiddos' top three complaints were Headaches (25%) , Cold/Sore Throat (20%) and Stomachaches (15%). This month in the school health newsletter we are highlighting sleep and electronic use, as fatigue can be a major player in headaches.

Great news, each month the nurse's office will be highlighting a health topic in the Milton Independent. You will have to check us out in on the health page. This is in an attempt to increase our collaboration with the community and reach out on trends and data we are seeing in the school.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns! :)
